Glad to hear that. The reason is this: except for your $HOME texmf
tree, TeX & friends use Kpathsea (sea = search) databases (ls-R) to
know if and where files they need are located (otherwise, each run of
TeX, LaTeX, updmap, etc., would take too long) --- mktexlsr updates
those databases. Therefore, when you add files to texmf trees other
than your $HOME tree, you have to run mktexlsr.
As you ran sudo updmap-sys *before* mktexlsr, updmap didn't know
anything about lucida.map.
When one makes a mistake with updmap,
sudo updmap-sys --nohash --nomkmap --syncwithtrees
is a way of saying ``OK, let's try starting anew from a clean state'';
but, again, *after* mktexlsr.
