Thanks for your response. That might work, but it's not what
the document lucida-sample.pdf says:

If you specify the option calligraphic for lucidabr, Lucida
Calligraphy will be the default roman font. A similar option
                         ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
handwriting makes Lucida Handwriting the default roman font.
                                          ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This, to me, says that simply writing
\usepackage[handwriting]{lucidabr} should suffice, but it
doesn't, at least not on my system.
