Thank you. Therefore the short answer to my original question
is «you can't» :-).

I'll use pre_linebreak_filter then. This requires some extra effort
to create the user interface (I'd prefer something like
\everyscript{cyrillic}{\fontspec{CyrFont}}, which I think is more
transparent) and it's not as general as I'd like, but at least it
solves the basic problem.
