[luatex] when will LuaTeX provide string functions that supersede those of the slnunicode library?

On p. 32 of the LuaTeX reference manual (version 0.75), there's the following enticing statement:

> The slnunicode library [of Unicode-aware string manipulation functions] will be replaced by an 
> internal Unicode library in a future LuaTeX version. 

Is it possible to be a bit more specific as to when this library might become available? :-)
