in general, while I agree with the protection of the public commands, 
I'm not really happy if we introduce unnecessary code changes *after* 
the last public dev release  --- even if they can "surely do no harm, 
can they?"

Ask David and others how often we have thought that in the past and were 
proven wrong.

The -dev releases are there to extend our pre-testing beyond our test 
suite. We should therefore not introduce further changes between the 
last -dev release and the real release unless the change is needed 
because of encountered issues with that dev release
