\subsection{Using original TrueType fonts with pdfTeX}

The standard and safe way is using Type~1 fonts. However, you may prefer the
original TrueType fonts.

The engine \pdfTeX\ supports both Type~1 and TrueType fonts and the package
\pkgname{gentium-tug} gives you the choice to use either the original TrueType
fonts or the converted Type~1 version.

Commands \verb|updmap-sys| or \verb|updmap| can enable and disable the TrueType
or Type~1 version of some font. The files \verb|gentium-type1.map| and
\verb|gentium-truetype.map| are used to select these fonts.

The default is using the Type~1 fonts and activating the TrueType fonts
consists of two steps.

First, you disable the Type~1 fonts with:

\begin{verbatim}
updmap-sys --disable gentium-type1.map
\end{verbatim}

After this command, you can't create documents with Gentium fonts.

Second, you enable the TrueType fonts:

\begin{verbatim}
updmap-sys --enable Map=gentium-truetype.map
\end{verbatim}

In general, for \LaTeX\ it suffices to include \verb|\usepackage{gentium}|
