[fptex] Adding $HOMETEXMF to TEXMF slows down compilation

OK, I found that if I set

HOMETEXMF=E:/Joes/texmf

instead of

HOMETEXMF=$HOME/texmf

the ls-R file is read. Also setting HOME to E:/Joes solves
the problem.

Could it be a problem with the slashes
(backward in HOME and forward in HOMETEXMF)?
