[fptex] ver 0.5 install problems - could not undump

I have installed fpTeX0.5 from the ftp source on to an NT file server. I set my 
path to include proper locations but I'm getting a fatal on any attempt to 
latex. [NOTE: This is an install over a copy of my previous 0.4b and includes 
my modified texmf.cnf and config.ps files.]

I see the following when I try to latex the standard base example file 
example2e.tex

C:\XFER\TEXSTUF\sample2e
>latex sample2e.tex
This is TeX, Version 3.14159 (Web2c 7.3.3.1)
latex.exe: fatal: Could not undump 23225 4-byte item(s).

Further examination with kpsewhich shows that the path settings and such are 
all OK such as
C:\XFER\TEXSTUF\sample2e
>kpsewhich -expand-path=$TEXMF
c:\TeX;n:/Win32/TeX/fpTeX05/texmf;n:/Win32/TeX/fpTeX05/jilatex

except for 
C:\XFER\TEXSTUF\sample2e
>kpsewhich -expand-var$TEXINPUTS
N:\WIN32\TEX\FPTEX05\BIN\WIN32\KPSEWH~1.EXE: unrecognized option `-expand-
var$TEXINPUTS'

which seems to be some sort of illegal option in fpTeX.

When I do a debug check, my DOS window is not large enough to capture all the 
lines but I see

Any advice appreciated including suggestions on better debugging.
