Override file location

That was what I was asking but it was from lack of experience with the
$SELFAUTOPARENT style vars.  I don't use tex, only maintain it's install
so I'm still fairly clueless.  Fabrice's solution was perfect for my
needs.

You were correct.  The only reason I wanted to texmf.cnf was the drive
letters.  Your info was what I needed and kpsewhich is quite happy now.  

However I still don't have a functional system yet.  The fpTeX commands
now complain about the .fmt files missing. Though kspewhich reports
T:\texmf/web2c in the search path and the files exist.  I'm 99% positive I
need to rebuild my ls-R but I haven't had time to mess with it at all
today.  Thats a job for next week.
