VARTEXFONTS

I have downloaded TeXLive5d and installed it on win32 (WinNT). Now I do not
succeed in convincing mktexpk to make its fonts on the T:-drive. It keeps
putting them in $VARTEXMF/fonts (=C:\TeXLive5d\texmf-var =
$SELFAUTOPARENT/texmf-var). These are the relevant settings:

in mktex.cnf:
: ${MT_FEATURES=appendonlydir:varfonts:fontmaps}

in texmf.cnf:
VARTEXFONTS = T:
(I also tried VARTEXFONTS = T:/ and VARTEXFONTS = T:/fonts and VARTEXFONTS =
T:\fonts)

The same worked fine in TeXLive4. Any idea how I can keep this behaviour?
