pk generation

As I reported earlier, I encountered a similar problem, which I
was able to get around by reinstalling the mktexpk.exe that I had
prior to unzipping windvi-0.66-pre1.zip: the new version was
able to get gsftopk to generate fonts but not metafont. I don't
know why gsftopk doesn't work for Michael, but after it fails
metafont ought to be tried, and it appears from his report that
this does not happen.

Can it be that the mktex* exe's from windvi-0.66-pre1.zip
require a new version of something else that was accidentally
omitted from the zip file?
