mktexpk: how to call mf?

Hallo,

I have installed the new fpTeX-beta1. Then I have tested the
automatic pk-Generation with mktexpk.

However mktexpk calls gsftopk for cmr10 in spite of the existence of
cmr10.mf. This is a disadvantage, because Metafont takes into account
the mfmode and produces better output. Whereas gsftopk can only
produce modeless pk files.

There are fonts, that exist only as Metafont-versions. gsftopk have
to fail in this case.

How mktexpk decides, which program (mf, gsftopk, ttf2pk) it has to
call for generating pk output?
How this can be configured by an user?
Have I something misconfigured?

Best regards
