Thanks Eli, I can't work out tonight how to record the debugging output. I'll ask some of the support staff at the University tomorrow. (They might not know much about TeX but I hope that they know how to record the output going to the screen. Thanks for your help so far. I've set KPATHSEA_DEBUG to -1 and now dvips gives screensfull of output. John
