$TEXMFMAIN is undefined (???)

Ich have a good working teTeX installation (1.0). In

  /usr/local/teTeX/bin/ix86-linux-libc60

are the Linux binaries and in

  /usr/local/teTeX/bin/win32

are the fpTeX (win32) binaries. In

  /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf

I have defined

  TEXMFMAIN = $SELFAUTOPARENT/share/texmf
  TEXMFLOCAL = $SELFAUTOPARENT/share/texmf.local
  VARTEXFONTS = $SELFAUTOPARENT/share/texfonts

The hole directory tree have I copied to a novell server
without any changes. Under win95 I have added the binary
directory to the path

SET FPTEX=\\FS11\bin\TeX\bin\win32

PATH=%PATH%;%FPTEX%;...

Most of the programs like latex and dvips are working but
the font creation fails. A call of `texhash' also fails

  P:\text>texhash

  \\FS11\BIN\TEX\BIN\WIN32\TEXHASH.EXE: $TEXMFMAIN is undefined or points to a non

  -existent directory;

  \\FS11\BIN\TEX\BIN\WIN32\TEXHASH.EXE: check your installation.

  $TEXMFMAIN = //FS11/BIN/TEX/share/texmf

The directory `$TEXMFMAIN = //FS11/BIN/TEX/share/texmf' _is_ the right
TEXMF directory! Other `kpsewhich' calls are correct

  P:\text>kpsewhich article.cls

  //FS11/BIN/TEX/share/texmf/tex/latex/base/article.cls

  P:\text>kpsewhich cmr10.300pk

  //FS11/BIN/TEX/share/texfonts/pk/cx/public/cm/cmr10.300pk

What goes wrong? Thanks in advance.
