Sorry about the HTML mail there. I'm afraid I'm behind a Microsoft
Exchange server :-( Here's my attempt to send the same message in plain
text; unfortunately, it may still have some HTML junk at the bottom.

I absolutely disagree that fptex should have gawk and perl. I have
absolutely no need for them when I download TeX. Of course, gawk would
be a somewhat negligible addition in terms of space; but perl is not, by
any measure---and if you need it, it's easy enough to get off the web.

Hmm, perhaps you were talking about the source distribution? If you
were, then I'd still say that it should be distributed separately,
although appropriate pointers should be given in the documentation.

In general, I disagree with the whole concept of making a Windows
machine look like a Unix box. But hey, perhaps that's a longer
discussion for another day.

Man is quickly growing obsolete; HTML or PDF is the way to go on
documentation these days, in my opinion---or, at the very least, some
sort of markup language that is easily converted to HTML. (In this case
it could be converted to man as well, much like Perl's POD format.)

It would be welcome, as well having installed also gawk (minimal need)
and perl (maximal).
Perhaps the problem is that such programs are rather independent from
TeX
stuff and already present on Unix but hardly rare on win32.
