JC> Ultimately, it would be very nice to be able to provide a
JC> sponsored trip for a first place winner, and for them to receive
JC> some kind of framed copy of their submission.

Absolutely. Among the other things I learned at BachoTeX is that this
is an ideal place to bring kids to: a great camp on a lake. Since
then I am thinking hard how to make this available for young TeX
students...

Of course transportation there from here is not cheap, but for
European students it may be a good idea.

JC> For the content of the competition, I like to think of TeX as
JC> being used to produce beautiful, or at least precise,
JC> documents. Perhaps inaugural years of the proposed competition,
JC> you could have an open ended call for competition: Produce a
JC> document that conveys <x,y, z characteristics of a beautiful
JC> document>, such that (a) the final product, if printed, does not
JC> exceed letter paper size; (b)

The thing is, what characteristics can we ask? Something that is
achievable most naturally through TeX

JC> In contest wording, it would be important to allow the flexibility
JC> for a contestant to typeset a written composition, such as a
JC> one-page essay about the history of typesetting, or for a
JC> contestant to create a more abstract piece...

Or making nice drawing using TikZ or PSTricks...

JC> Regarding judging, I would suggest that contestants provide source
JC> first to ensure that the product was produced in TeX and second to
JC> assess innovative or otherwise favorable uses.
