8+3

One of the major problems with long filename references on 8+3 systems
is that there are at least three  different algorithms for mapping from
>8.>3 to 8+3: the simplest just truncates after the first 8 and the
first 3; the second takes the first five and the last three of the
pre-period part (I don't know what it does with the post period part);
unfortunately PC-NFS does neither of these, and generates a temporary
unique name of the form <first-5>^xy, where "xy" are hex digits.  Thus
any dcoument which references a filename longer than 8+3 is inherently
unportable :-(  ** Phil.
