It makes more sense to switch to lualatex. Then you can simply
use the fonts without the additional vf|tfm files.

For example: Instead of loading fontspec and fontencoding use

\usepackage{fontspec}
\setmainfont{Baskervaldx-Reg.otf}
\setsansfont{FiraSans-Regular.otf}

There are optional arguments possible for scaling, ligatures,
scripts, ...  if needed
