[EXTERNAL] Re: TeX on Windows? [success!] [BUT PCTeX?]

Hi Robert,
On your general question:
> I have a general question. Most of the regular people like me are on
either a PC or a Mac, and don't use Linux or Unix like typical TeXperts (my
impression). How is it that there is not room in the market for an
economical user interface like PCTeX, which apparently has crashed as a
company?
My impression has been that "most of the regular people on PC or a Mac"
would not need the level of sophistication provided by TeX and use an
alternative solution (such as MS Office). This is definitely the case in
e.g. the life sciences or the humanities.
In the hard sciences / technical writing circles, the developer lifecycle
necessitates certain common tools, such as advanced text editors or IDEs.
Which then in turn leads to large communities who rely on TeX-oriented
plugins in their editors. The "LaTeX Workshop" extension to VSCode for
example, first released in 2016, today reports 1.2 million installations:
https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=James-Yu.latex-workshop
Another modern trend is moving away from local installation and relying on
web editing services. As the biggest current example, the Overleaf team
reported reaching 6 million users in 2020:
https://www.overleaf.com/blog/reaching-six-million-users-in-an-unprecedented-six-months
The cloud-editing paradigm is much preferred exactly by casual users who do
not feel interested in learning the intricate details of software
installation and "power user" techniques. It is also a paradigm with a
clear business model, and a likely trend to continue in the next decade.
Separately, there are actually tens of support tools for TeX that are
available for use today, each serving a different subcommunity / technology
stack. This (incomplete!) wikipedia article compares 24 of them at the
moment:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_TeX_editors
Whether any of them fits your exact needs or not, the point is that there
is a somewhat high bar for newly built tools to enter the scene. They would
have to put a lot of effort to reach the quality of existing tools, many of
which are free to use, and then would have to justify a price tag that
attracts enough paying users long-term. Not impossible, but also not a
particularly inviting business proposition. I've had some first-person
experience on that end, as a developer for one of the newer projects that
attempted entering this space (Authorea), so my comments are colored
through that experience. That company ended up acquired by Wiley, which
wasn't necessarily our first-choice business outcome at the onset.
Greetings,
Deyan
