The automatic search order can be made reliable by the help of package
`grfext`. Example (for pdfTeX):
\usepackage{grfext}
\PrependGraphicsExtensions*{.pdf}
...
\includegraphics{myimage}
Then first `.pdf` is tried (if the current graphics driver supports it)
before the other extensions.
