[texhax] MLTeX question

Hello,

Why if in format file the line is uncommented,
the output changes from è to à ?

Compile this format file as `tex -ini -enc -mltex tex.ini'

\font\tenrm=rm-lmr10 \tenrm
\mubytein=1 \mubytelog=1
\mubyte ^^e0 Ã \endmubyte
\charsubdef"E0 = 18 101
\dump


This is the test file (UTF-8):
à 
\bye

Although the font is completely compatible, the output
changes. Please explain why, and what should be done that
the output will remain è with the new font.
