    I need advice on how to typeset algorithms in computer science papers 
    (not a specific journal yet).

the ctan topic list for "pseudocode"
  https://ctan.org/topic/pseudocode
contains the list of algorithm-related packages I was referring to.
(why a request for "algorithm" supplied nothing useful is being
investigated.)
