[texhax] How to make two references to the same footnote?

Hello,
I was following the example in "The LaTeX2e Reference Manual".

"This command can be used to produce several consecutive footnote markers
referring to the same foot note with:
\footnotemark[\value{footnote}]
"

Alas, all I get is that a number is expected and Latex inserts a 0. I
tried placing a number in place of "footnote", but that failed to have
any effect.
