Thank you for the explanation.  It makes sense, and the code makes sense
too, as far as I can see.  (Personally I'd add some comments explaining
the purpose of the new conditionals. :)

It looks like a good change to me.  If the LaTeX people cannot think of
a compatibility problem with it, well, that is pretty persuasive.
