in the face of the evidence, i must
retract my contention that these codes
have been disabled in latex 2015.
i seem to have misunderstood something
that i heard at tug 2015.

however, ulrike's comment that people
don't understand that these commands
are not (and never will be) additive
is more than enough reason to stop
and think before using them:

    But the main problem is naturally that many people don't understand
    the difference between \itshape and \it, use them only because they
    are shorter and then complain when \it\bf doesn't give the expected
    output.
