[texhax] Rendering of pages intermittent.

Does anyone know, please, what causes a loss of proper rendering of pages
when using MiKTeX 2.9?

One day the picture placements relative to surrounding text are perfect, the
next day they are not.

Even when I try to compensate using \vspace it is ignored.

I am using amsmath, Latex => dvi, and \dvips (5) rendering (as distinct from
pk).

I am getting the message: "The page could not be rendered" after almost
every build.

I have tried re-installing MiKTeX.
