I think you intend
  \renewcommand{\theenumii}{\alph{enumii}}

I'm not sure that loading enumerate.sty matters much.  As for
enumitem.sty, check the doc in regard to the option 'leftmargin='
for enumerate, e.g., try \begin{enumerate}[leftmargin=*] with
both of those lists.
