[texhax] question about " \listoffigures"

Hi folks,

   I use the following code for my thesis:

\usepackage{amsmath}
\begin{document}

\begin{figure}
\caption{$\rho$}
\end{figure}

\listoffigures
\end{document}

But I got the error message like this:

But when I change "$\rho$" inot "$rho$", it works fine. So it seems like the "\listoffigures" cannot accept Greek 
letters in the caption.

Could someone help me with that?
