So some editor highlighting brace matching would have helped. 
Moreover, such mistakes yield typical error messages such as 
"Runaway definition?", and it has often been advised to include 
such error messages in problem reports. A newbie user may have 
no idea what they are telling, but TeXnicians know. After a 
little training, everybody may understand the hints from those 
cryptical messages.
