[texhax] Constructing a very thin space

Trying your other address.

Can you help, please, with the construction of a very thin space.

The spacing of, say. 4.5 derived from:
\renewcommand{\thefigure}{\thechapter.\arabic{figure}} is too tight.

Whereas \renewcommand{\thefigure}{\thechapter\,.\,\arabic{figure}} is too
loose,

And the use of \hspace is not allowed.
