[texhax] \listof in float package

The standard list of figures and list of tables put extra 
vertical space before the figures or tables of each chapter. 
Does anyone know how to get the same effect when using \listof in 
the float package?  Manually inserting the spacing is not a 
realistic option, because the text is generated from a database 
periodically.
