[texhax] how to get underscore _character_ into a .pdf using LaTeX

This is being discussed on the OS X TeX mailing list at the moment, but I'm drawing a blank.

The default behaviour for TeX is to draw the underscore in as a rule --- how does one coerce getting a character instead?
