I downloaded llncs.cls from

http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0

and compiled your example ---as well as their demo file--- without problems.

You haven't tell us which OS platform you're using, but I can't figure a reason why latex is in your path but article class can't be found. I guess we need more data.

Try in your terminal or Command Prompt

kpsewhich article.cls

On Linux or Mac OS you should get something like

/usr/local/texlive/2010/texmf-dist/tex/latex/base/article.cls
