I had heard of this before, but hadn't accounted for it in my 
example.  However, I think I will have to leave things as they 
are.  These documents inevitably have both SI and English 
measurements in them, and I had thought it best to print textroman 
for SI measurements, and slanted for English measurements.  If I 
was to incorporate proper minus signs, I think I would have to do 
something like change typefaces or font sizes to indicate the 
difference between SI and English units.  Or is there some 
preferred way to do that, that I am not aware of?
