I'm not a guru too, but I could look at the task. However, the problem is
that your code fragments do not work at all. For example, I tried:

\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
\makeatletter
\def\drv at sep##1{\advance\drvcount1\relax}\the\drv at ColEntries 
\showthe\drvcount
\end{document}

and got many error messages, unlikely related to your request.
