[texhax] Suppressing endnote markers in text

Is there a simple way to create endnotes without printing endnote numbers in
the running text, but have them numbered in the list that appears at the end
of the chapter (or book)?

That is, the command
"\endnote{This is an endnote}"
should produce an endnote that can be printed by "\theendnotes" but no
number marking the endnote appears in the chapter.
