[texhax] Optional argument to \cite{}

Thanks Steve, that's very helpful.  However, I already seem to have
provoked numerical-natbib into behaving in a way inconsistent with its
documentation.  According to page 6 of the natbib version 8.1 manual,

\citet[pp.~171--176]{Phillips:2009:GFD}

is supposed to produce output like

Phillips [17, pp. 171-176].

Unfortunately, it actually produces

Phillips [17], pp. 171–176.

(bibliography style is abbrvnat).

Any ideas, please?
