    Life will be so much easier when TeX fonts are automagically handled like
    fonts in the rest of the system. 

They already are, with XeTeX.  Of course document portability is
pretty much a lost cause when using system fonts.

    PS I see that luatex 0.28 is included with Kubuntu. 

luatex 0.28 doesn't have any system font support.  Whatever XeTeX is in
your distribution should, though.
