Obviously, you haven't; it was sort of destined to failure:
It was more the idea of using \mathord that I thought worth mentioning.
One could, of course, do something using a macro with arguments

to correct the spacing, but ... \middle is so much easier.
What confused me was that \middle does not appear in LaTeX, nor in plain
TeX, nor in the TeXbook, nor in tex.web, nor in etex.src. I finally
realized it is a new e-TeX primitive. Cool.
