I tried

  \def\refsame{#3 SAME}%

  \ifx\curref\curchap\refsame%
    \else\ifx\curref\cursec\refsame%
      \else\ifx\curref\cursubsec\refsame%
        \else\ifx\curref\cursubsubsec\refsame%

and now I get the exact opposite effect: now it's always
\refother... I still must be doing something wrong...
