Be aware that this will only do as long as you start programs from a
bash shell. If you start i.e. emacs from the menu and launch latex
from within emacs, chances are that still your old ubuntu texlive will
be used. To circumvent this you can
* add those variable to /etc/environment
* add a script to the Xsession startup sequence that sets the
variable or sources ~/.profile or the like
* write a ~/.xsession script to set the varbiables and start your
window manager
