I know the original problem has been solved but here are two other
relevant tools (GNU I think):

which : "which <program-name>" shows the full path to the program, so 
"which perl" should display something like "/usr/bin/perl" ;

dos2unix (unix2dos, mac2unix) convert line-ends (and other os-specific
textfile conventions).
