[texhax] \ref for diagrams

Hi, all,

I want to be able to number and refer to diagrams (as produced, e.g.,  
by the XYPic package) in the same way as equations.  I think I once  
knew how, but I can't track down a way to do it.

I've checked the FAQ, as well as the guide and ref for XYPic.  I'm  
not sure how to phrase the question, but all my attempts either gave  
me way too much to check, or came up dry.

Help!
