[texhax] incorporating amsLaTeX

Hello.  I have downloaded MacTeX and the American
Mathematical Society LaTex files for mathematics
typesetting, but for the life of me I cannot seem to make
MacTex recognize the ams files.  I created the
texmf/tex/latex directory and the ams files are inside the
latex folder at the end of this directory, but MacTex seems
to ignore them.

Have you any suggestions?  I called someone at the ams and
they suggested that there is some sort of resource
recognition control on MacTex that needs to be updated, but
I can't find anything like that.
