[texhax] running metafont for the first time

Dear Sir - 

 

I created a file io.dvi by the process described in chapter 5 of the book
METAFONT by Dr Knuth 

(using the program mf and then the program gftodvi).

When I opened io.dvi file using YAP in windows I got a message saying "Not
all fonts could be loaded".

"Document Properties" in the YAP file menu indicated that a font called gray
was not loadable.

The gray logbook contained the following detailed message:

Font metrics written on gray.tfm.

Output written on gray.600gf (123 characters, 13296 bytes).

Transcript written on gray.log.

METAFONT failed for some reason

makepk: METAFONT failed on "gray".

 

 

Loading 'cmr10' instead

which concluded saying "Metafont failed for some reason.loading cmr10
instead".

 

The picture in io.dvi is a bizarre display of various letters, probably from
cmr10, outlining what resembles the letter O.

I would guess that letters from cmr10 replaced gray things (as described in
Appendix H of METAFONT) which would 

Normally have outlined a much better letter O.  The printed version of
io.dvi shows a square, some labels, but no curves 

and no bizarre display of letters like that in io.dvi

 

A search for files of the form gray*.* revealed gray.mf and gray.tfm but no
gray.600gf and no gray.log. 

 

Please help me correct this problem with the gray font (or whatever) so that
I may reasonably 

continue working my way through METAFONT.
