This actually works okay. It does mean that in my XML I will have to
separate the number from the title, but doing so is not that
difficult.

XML separates content from layout. XSLT converts the XML documument
into a layout formate, such as HTML or TeX or FO. XML is extremely
flexible in this way. 

XSLT is extremely flexible and powerful for manipulating documents.
For example, I can write a simple rule to format the first paragraph a
certain way and the last paragraph a certain way. I can decide to
number my introduction or not number it depending on a simple
variable. Since I know XSLT so well, and since it is relatively easy
to use, it makes sense to use it to number my document (amongst other
things). 

Anyways, thanks for the tip on redefining \thechapter. I was thinking
exactly along these lines. While I would really like a way to create a
hanging indent for my titles (just as I can do for paragraph), I think
your suggestion should work in most situations.
