I don't know about the incorrect alignment causing
print-through problems, but the wide-outer, narrow-
inner, is (I am told) an American convention which
exists because Americans love to write in the margins
(whilst we British are taught never to write in our
textbooks). I don't know if this is apocryphal or
true, but it certainly comes as no surprise to me that
you get margins like this by default. I would
imagine that some simple tweaking of \oddsidemargin,
\evensidemargin might solve that problem : see
http://web.image.ufl.edu/help/latex/margins.shtml
for hints.
