i presume you are running pdflatex on this file?

if so, you are encountering a limitation on what pdftex (the
underlying engine) can do.  (there's been a discussion of this issue
on comp.text.tex recently.)

if you're not running pdflatex, you should tell us what you're
_actually_ doing.
