Well, I know next to nothing about LaTeX, William
('though I know a little about TeX), but surely
any attempt to place a \caption or a \label
/within/ a verbatim environment will be doomed
to failure as it will be displayed rather
than interpreted ? Of course, I could use
a nestable verbatim environment [1] but
I'm trying to use standard LaTeX markup to
help the editors ...
If you can illustrate how I might use your
idea in practice, I'd be delighted to try
it : here is a fragment of my existing code --
\subsection {explanation.letters}
\begin{verbatim}
04101224483246
0410122448324638
04101224485428
041236
041236
044820123654441636203228
0448363210204416485438483236323850042422...
\end{verbatim}
