If you want the tilde positioned as usual, but with small text above it
\stackrel{iid}{\tilde}
should do the trick. If you want the text positioned as usual, but with a tilde under it, add \usepackage{accents} to your preamble and then define a new command:
\newcommand{\commandname}[1]{\underaccent{\sim}{#1}}

Onderwerp: [texhax] \sim symbol with text above it
Hello
I am trying to typeset the \sim symbol (a tilde) with text ('iid')
directly above it. I tried
\sim^{iid} but this makes a 'usual' superscript (that is, to the right
of the tilde)
Thanks in advance
Peter
